Why on-device matters

Privacy isn't a setting.
It's where the work happens.

Most voice tools stream your microphone to a company's servers. OpenWispr does the entire job — listening, transcribing, polishing — on the device in your hands. The difference isn't a promise. It's architecture.

Cloud dictation
Your voice is recorded
Uploaded to their servers
Stored, logged, maybe used for training
Subject to breaches, subpoenas, policy changes, and an account you can't truly close.
OpenWispr
Your voice is captured
Transcribed & polished on your device
Text appears at your cursor
Nothing is uploaded. There's no server to breach, no account to leak, no log to subpoena. Full stop.
Inside OpenWispr

It doesn’t just hear you.
It understands you.

Stammer, backtrack, think out loud, change your mind halfway through. OpenWispr follows the way people actually talk — and quietly hands back text you’d be glad to have written.

The core

Every word stays on the machine in front of you.

Speech and language models run entirely on your device — the fluency you’d expect from the cloud, with none of the exposure. No streaming. No servers. No internet required.

Dictate anywhere

Any app, any text field — if your cursor blinks there, you can speak there. One global shortcut works everywhere, system-wide, with no per-app setup.

How it works

From thought to text in a single breath.

1
Hold a key
Press ⌥ Space wherever your cursor already is. No app to open, no window to hunt for.
2
Say it however it comes
Ramble, restart, think out loud. OpenWispr is built for real speech — not careful, robotic diction.
3
Watch it land
Clean, punctuated, shaped for wherever you’re writing — then gone from memory unless you choose to keep it.
See it work

From messy speech to finished text.

OpenWispr strips the “ums,” fixes punctuation, and respects how you actually talk. Then refine any selection with a local LLM.

Built to be trusted

Privacy you can verify,
not just believe.

Trust shouldn’t require faith. Every guarantee on the right is enforced by how the app is built — and because the source is open, you can confirm each one yourself.

Questions

Good questions, honest answers.

Does it really work offline?+
Yes — completely. The speech and polish models live on your device. Once installed, OpenWispr never needs a network connection to transcribe, format, or refine your text.
Is it actually free?+
Yes. OpenWispr is free and MIT-licensed. There’s no paid tier, no usage cap, and no account. The models run on your hardware, so there are no server costs to pass on to you.
Will the models slow down my machine?+
OpenWispr ships right-sized models tuned for on-device speed. Transcription is near real-time on modern Macs and Android devices, and you can pick a lighter model if you prefer.
Which languages are supported?+
The underlying Whisper-class models support dozens of languages out of the box. You select your primary language in Settings, and dictation works fully offline in each.
Can I delete my history?+
Anytime. History is stored locally and you can clear individual entries or wipe everything in one click. You can also turn history off entirely so nothing is ever written to disk.
What platforms are supported?+
Android is on Google Play, and macOS is available from GitHub Releases. Windows and Linux builds are in active development — star the repo to follow along.
